Wondering if your skincare routine should change with the seasons? As we shift from summer to winter, our skin faces challenges like dehydration and a weakened barrier. To help, Local Samosa consulted experts for advice on adjusting your routine. With simpler, streamlined regimens becoming more popular, we share expert tips on what to keep or leave behind for glowing skin year-round. Local Samosa spoke with Dr. Anuradha Sharma, Skin Expert at Fixderma & FCL Skincare, for expert recommendations.
The Impact of Seasonal Changes
Most experts agree that your skincare routines should adapt to both weather and skin type, as seasonal changes, from autumn to winter, affect skin physiology. These changes can lead to dehydration and a weakened skin barrier.
Dr. Anuradha shared, “Dehydration of the skin is inclusive for the problem of water loss from the surface layer of the skin. This may occur due to the drop in temperatures and the accompanying dry air. Another factor is Impaired skin barrier and increased sensitivity. The colder weather reduces the skin’s natural oil production, making it harder for the skin to stay hydrated. This weakens the skin’s protective barrier, leaving it more prone to dryness, redness, irritation, and sensitivity.”
Signs that your Current Skincare Routine is a No-Go
There are certain indicators that tell if the skincare routine is not working, especially with changing weather. “Increased dryness, flakiness, or peeling, as well as persistent redness are some signs. Sometimes, it also leads to unexpected breakouts. Changes in oil or sebum production can also be a clue. These symptoms suggest that the skin’s natural barrier is compromised and needs extra care to restore its balance and health,” clarified Dr. Anuradha.
Skincare that’s a must for the Harsher, Drier Weather
It’s no news that one should adapt the skincare routine according to the changing weather to protect and nourish the skin.
Dr. Anuradha mentioned, “In cold weather conditions, it is important to find moisturisers that are rich in thickening agents such as humectants, for example, hyaluronic acid, which draws moisture as well as emollients like ceramides and fatty acids that help in reinforcing the skin the barrier. It is also important to avoid using strong cleansers including those that contain exfoliants; instead of these, use moisturisers and non-foaming cleansers agents with mild surfactants. The most common is skipping a very essential step which is the application of sunscreen. Sunscreen is necessary in winter too because the skin is exposed to the harmful effects of UVA rays.”
Dry Skin Must-Haves in Colder Weather
For dry skin, it’s essential to focus on products that hydrate, nourish, and protect the skin barrier. Dr. Anuradha recommends initially starting with a gentle cleanser like a non-drying cleanser. “Follow up with thick hydrating moisturisers with humectants, ceramides and peptides, something like a solid moisturising lotion to help lock in the moisture. Another beneficial product that can be added to your skin care routine is a hyaluronic acid serum, like a hyaluronic acid face serum which has four molecules of hyaluronic acid providing deep hydration. To include brightening agents, use niacinamide as it has protective anti-inflammatory properties as well.”
Combination Skin Must-Haves in Colder Weather
The combination skin type has to keep different things in mind to make it look perfect for winter, emphasises Dr. Anuradha. “This skin type typically has both oily areas, like the T-zone, and drier areas, like the cheeks. Choose a lightweight moisturiser like a barrier repair face moisturizer to hydrate skin without making it greasy. For spot treatments, use salicylic acid, which helps to unclog pores and reduce acne. Avoid applying it to the whole face. This approach helps maintain the skin’s balance, keeping it healthy, hydrated, and clear.”
Sensitive Skin Must-Haves in Colder Weather
For sensitive skin, experts say that one has to follow the crucial steps like cleansing, applying moisturiser containing hydrating and calming ingredients such as squalane and panthenol. “Squalane helps lock in moisture without clogging pores, while panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5) soothes and repairs the skin. Add calming moisturizing agents like a cica cream that will help with any irritations. To reduce additional irritation, do not use hot water when washing or taking a shower, as it can aggravate redness and cause more skin dryness. Rather, use tepid water instead to help keep your skin comfortable and prevent any imbalances. A hydrating mask can be helpful to maintain the skin’s hydration,” Dr. Anuradha informed.
Acne-Prone Skin Must-Haves in Colder Weather
Dr. Anuradha affirmed, “If one has to look for the acne skin routine, a face wash with salicylic acid is a good choice. If undergoing over-drying treatments for acne (like high concentrations of benzoyl peroxide, retinol, tretinoin), it’s best to protect the skin by using the “sandwich method.” This method consists of practising the layering of strong ingredients between moisturisers to reduce irritation and avoid dry skin.”
“Choose a non-comedogenic, lightweight moisturizer that has ceramides to give the skin some moisture and not block pores. This helps to restore the skin’s natural barrier while also providing the skin with nourishment. Also, with the use of masks having a combination of kaolin and bentonite can easily absorb the excess oil, while keeping moisture balance, thus making it a suitable mask for acne-prone skin. Something like an acne gel can be used to cure active acne. These ingredients help in oil production regulation as well as in the electric business without depriving the body of moisture, thus, keeping the skin clear of acne and healthy.”
Products you Should not Skip
For maintaining a healthy skin, it is no secret that one has to incorporate certain supplements into the routine that can also help sustain its health and youthfulness. “Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids, for instance, are among the essential fatty acids that play a crucial role in improving the lipid barrier of the skin. It provides support in hydration and moisture retention as well as moisture battling properties within the skin’s physiology. This prevents moisture loss from the skin in order to further fight ageing. These can also be in the form of supplements or obtained through food such as fishes, walnuts or flax seeds,” said Dr. Anuradha.
“Collagen supplements can also be mentioned as an important type of protein that contributes to the maintenance of skin tone and elasticity, as well. While collagen supplementation helps to support the structural framework of the skin, reduce the visible signs of ageing, and improve overall skin texture and firmness,” she added further.
Dr. Anuradha’s Tips for Glowy Skin
“The skincare routine that needs to be followed in winter season and also the ingredients that provide nourishment to the skin are;
1. Hydrating Ingredients: Applying products like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides helps to lock in the moisture in the skin. This keeps the skin plumpy and soft in winter.
2. Brightening Ingredients: Ingredients like Vitamin C, Niacinamide, and alpha arbutin helps to combat the dullness. These ingredients brighten the skin, reduce hyperpigmentation, and boost collagen production for a radiant complexion.
3. Exfoliating Ingredients: Choose low concentrations of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) for gentle exfoliation, enhancing skin texture, and achieving a smoother complexion.
4. Soothing Additives: Incorporate soothing ingredients such as Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5) and squalene to soothe the skin and minimise irritation, ensuring comfort all season long.”
