Even though many may believe that suits are monotonous and do not have much scope of modification, Barkat Ali & Brothers, a tailoring service from Kolkata's Palk Street, can make this notion go wrong.

Established in 1910 by Barkat Ali and his brothers Fazal Elahi, Karam Elahi, the brand is now run by its third-generation brothers, namely Sarfraz and Sheraz Ali. The brothers were born in Sialkot, Pakistan, in the late 1880s but moved to Kolkata to tailor uniforms for the British army. The space where they opened the brand was originally a stable space for army horses in The Grand Hotel (now The Oberoi Grand) on Chowringhee Road.

Now, one can find the store in the contemporary interiors with marbles. Not only do they cater to Indians but also their international clients. From two-piece and three suits to other styles, the tailors here are expert enough to make you stand out from the crowd.

If you are very particular about the materials and fabric of the suits, you can approach them with the materials. However, they also give you an option to choose one from the fabrics available with them. Currently, despite employing many tailors, Sheraz handles the measurements and cutting while Sarfraz manages trials and sales.

Even film celebrities and politicians have adorned outfits stitched by them. The brand has designed attires for Prosenjit Chatterjee in the 2003 film Chokher Bali while Shashi Tharoor and Yusuf Pathan have also enjoyed their designs. The masterwork of these brothers has also been noticed by Wes Anderson, the director of the Oscar-winning film 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' after the pop singing duo Parekh and Singh got their suits tailored from them!
