Government to replace toll booths with GPS imaging within one year

The government will replace the toll booths with GPS imaging soon according to which a camera will be fixed at the entry point of the road and will track the movement of the vehicles.

Halting at toll booths will soon become an old story as now the vehicles will be tracked through a GPS imaging. The government has decided to replace the toll booth with GPS imaging on vehicles for the collections within one year.

According to Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, the physical booths will be removed from across the country.

The money, as announced by him in the Lok Sabha, will be collected through a GPS imaging system eradicating the need to stop at the physical gates.

How will the replacement of toll booths with GPS imaging work?

As per the new system, there will be a camera at the entry point of the road that will capture vehicles on GPS.

The GPS-based system will track the movements of vehicles and deduct the toll from the linked bank account of the vehicle owner. 

Currently, India has a total of 566 toll plazas as of March 2020 according to government data.

On the other hand, the total toll collection on National highways had grown by 10 per cent in 2019-20 as stated by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

The usage of FASTags, which was introduced in 2016, had been made compulsory for vehicles from January 1.

However, from February 16, vehicles without FASTag are paying just double the number of toll fees at electronic toll plazas.
