We have witnessed the power of social media when it comes to spreading the word among people. One more time, this powerful medium has proved its importance as it helped a homeless person get an amount that would not have been possible otherwise. Deshraj, a Mumbai auto driver received Rs 24 lakh through crowdfunding after his story went viral on social media through through the Humans of Bombay post.

The community organisation, Humans of Bombay, had shared Deshraj's story on February 11. Deshraj had told in the post as how he had to sell his house to pay for the education of his granddaughter. The story had caught the attention of social media users.

Soon after, Gunjan Ratti, a Mumbai resident had started a fundraising page for Deshrajon Facebook. With an aim to raise Rs 20 lakh for Deshraj's house, fortunately, the page managed to get Rs and Rs 24 lakh.

To fulfill granddaughter's dream

Deshraj had lost his two sons a few years back after which the responsibility of his wife, daughter-in-law, and four grandchildren came on his shoulders. He started driving auto from 6 am till midnight, only to earn Rs 10,000 a month.

However, he had to run the house in just Rs 4,000 as the rest of the money was used for the school fees of his grandkids. All these struggles never let Deshraj down as he used to be happy knowing about his granddaughter's performance in school.

He had become extremely happy after his granddaughter scored 80% in her 12th boards. On that day, Deshraj also offered free rides to customers. After his granddaughter said that she wanted to pursue B.Ed from Delhi, Deshraj sold his house to fulfill her dreams.

He sent the rest of his family members to a relative's place in his village and continued in Mumbai without a house.

Recently, Humans of Bombay had shared the news on their Instagram handle about the donations adding the ongoing "pawry" meme. In a Reel video shared by the page, Deshraj can be seen saying, "Ye main hoon, Deshraj; yeh mera auto aur Hamari party ho rahi hai”. He can also be seen receiving a cheque at the end of the video.

Netizens have also shared their happiness on Instagram while thanking people who contributed to this noble cause.
