Delhi government has given a deadline of two years to all its departments including municipal corporations, Delhi Police, and district authorities, to build separate toilets for transgender persons.
The government of Delhi has ordered, making it compulsory for all its departments, to construct separate toilets for transgender persons.
The order will be applicable for all government offices, district authorities, municipal corporations, state-run companies, and the Delhi Police. The notification was issued on February 12 by the chief secretary, Vijay Dev.
Individuals to use toilets for PwDs before separate toilets are built
The government has given a total time of two years from the date of issue of the order to build the toilets. Till the time such toilets are built, transgender persons will be able to use the facilities meant for persons with disabilities (PwD).
The toilets will identifiable as they will display the symbols for both PwDs and 'T' for transgender persons.
In the year 2014, the Supreme court had granted access to separate toilets for transgender persons in public places. However, it had also mentioned the right of a transgender individual to identify with the gender as per their understanding.
