It's time to row your boat, and read, as India's first boat library is here in Kolkata!

After introducing 'Library on the wheel', Kolkata has now launched India's first boat library, and we can't wait to read our favourite books with a gorgeous river view!

Kolkata is a city of books for multiple reasons. It has one of the biggest libraries in the country. In November 2020, it introduced the very first tram library for kids, and every year it celebrates literature with its International Book Fair, but this year the city has added another feather on its cap by launching India's first boat library, and we are so proud of it!

The West Bengal Transport Corporation has introduced Kolkata's first floating library, and now we can enjoy a happy reading session in midst of the river Hoogly. This interesting library has been named ' The Young Readers’ Boat Library'. It features more than 500 books in English, Hindi, and Bengali, and has almost all the genres on the shelves!

This boat library will let you float, and read on Hooghly waters for 3 hours. The tickets are quite pocket-friendly too. For adults, it is Rs.100, while for the young bibliophiles, it is kept at Rs.50. To encourage readership among girls, the ticket for girls below the age of 18 is also Rs.50

Though the concept of the floating library is new in India, it's quite common around the world. Manhattan came up with its floating library in 2014, and Bangladesh also has one, floating on the Gumani River.
