Mumbai second most congested city in the world; the traffic continues even in COVID!

We all know Mumbai is known for traffic congestion. But who could think that Mumbai will remain congested even in COVID and lockdown! A recent report by TomTom Traffic Index shows that Mumbai was the second most congested city in the world, in the year 2020, after Moscow.

The study conducted in 416 cities across 57 countries, states that Moscow is the most congested city in the world. However, three cities of India came in the top 10 list. Bengaluru stood on the sixth where New Delhi ranked the eighth position for the most congested city due to traffic.

However, the study also found decreasing signs in the congestion level of cities. In Mumbai, the congestion decreased by 12% as compared to the data of 2019. Further, New Delhi recorded a decline of 9% Bengaluru also observed a 20% decrease in congestion as the figures slipped from 71% in 2019 to 51% in 2020.

The data also showed the difference in congestion levels in Mumbai during rush hours. The level decreased by 18% in the morning and 17% in the evening during peak hour.

Mumbai is dealing with traffic rush for a long time. The major contributor for it is the increasing number of vehicles. However, the length of roads always remains unchanged.

Some shocking facts also came through this study. According to the report, Mumbai recorded "zero decreases" in the congestion levels during April. The data also stated that Mumbai drivers spend 53% extra time travelling to reach a destination due to traffic congestion.

The other cities in the top 10 lists for traffic congestion are Manila, Bogota, Novosibirsk, Kyiv, Lima, Istanbul, and Jakarta.
