Why Night Trekking in Periyar Tiger Reserve is a Must-Do
The Periyar Tiger Reserve, located in the heart of Thekkady, Kerala, is known for its rich biodiversity and picturesque landscapes, making it a perfect destination for any wildlife enthusiast. But what truly sets this experience apart is the night trekking adventure. The trek is designed for those who want to witness the forest at its most mysterious — when the animals of the night come to life.
This trekking experience isn’t just about the walk; it’s about the journey through the jungle’s dense thickets under the watchful eyes of skilled forest guards and watchers. During the trek, you’ll encounter nocturnal animals that remain hidden during daylight, including civets, porcupines, flying squirrels, and various types of owls. If you're lucky, you might even spot a tiger or a herd of elephants in the distance.
The atmosphere is rich in sounds and smells, giving you an unparalleled connection with the forest. But don’t expect to be walking alone! The trek is conducted in small groups to ensure both safety and intimacy with nature. If you're worried about your safety, don’t be. Each group is accompanied by forest protection staff, and armed guards are always on hand to ensure everything stays calm. But don’t let the presence of guards fool you — the jungle is unpredictable, and you’ll find yourself in awe of the raw, unfiltered beauty of nature.
The Night Trekking Itinerary
The Periyar Tiger Reserve is home to a rich diversity of species, and during your night trek, the thrill will begin when you might come across elephants, porcupines, or even elusive tigers. Elephants, often spotted near waterholes, are a majestic sight in the moonlight. The graceful flight of flying squirrels between trees is sure to leave a lasting impression, while the spiky porcupines wander the forest floor. The eerie calls of owls and the sneaky, nocturnal movements of civets add an exciting thrill to your trek, making the whole experience unforgettable.
The cost for this thrilling 3-hour adventure is Rs. 1,500 per person, though if the group size is fewer than two people, a minimum charge of Rs. 2,900 applies. Children under 12 are not allowed for safety reasons, so it's best suited for older teens and adults. To secure your spot, bookings must be made in advance through the Periyar Tiger Reserve’s eco-tourism office. Please note, the ticket price excludes the reserve's entrance fee, so plan accordingly. Here’s how your night trekking adventure will unfold, step by step:
1. Getting There:
Before you head to the Periyar Tiger Reserve, make sure you’re well-prepared. The nearest major cities are Kochi and Madurai, both approximately 4-5 hours away by road. From either city, you can hire a cab or take a bus to Thekkady, where the reserve is located. Once in Thekkady, make your way to the Periyar Tiger Reserve, where you’ll check in at either the Bamboo Grove or the Entrance Gate. Don’t forget to carry your ID and the necessary booking confirmation (bookings should ideally be made well in advance).
2. Preparing for the Trek:
The trek begins in one of three slots, depending on availability and your booking: 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM, 10:00 PM - 1:00 AM, or 1:00 AM - 4:00 AM. Each slot lasts around three hours, offering a perfect balance between adventure and relaxation. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your guides, sign a waiver form (safety first!), and receive a torch to light your way. Wear sturdy shoes and long-sleeved clothing to protect against insects and thorns.

3. The Trek Begins:
Once everything’s set, the group embarks on the trail. Initially, you'll walk along a tar road before entering the dense jungle. As the night progresses, the path narrows, and the surrounding darkness amplifies the sounds of wildlife around you. The guides will lead the way, giving you fascinating insights into the jungle’s nocturnal activities and its wide range of species. The guides will also share interesting details about the forest’s eco-system, including its wildlife. For example, although there are around 40 tigers in the reserve, sightings are rare due to the dense forest cover. The trek also gives you a chance to appreciate the eco-tourism efforts in place to protect this magnificent sanctuary.
4. The Experience in the Jungle:
During the trek, you might spot a wide variety of wildlife. The mouse deer, civets, and bison are some of the many animals active during the night. If you're lucky, you may catch sight of sambar deer or even hear the distant call of a tiger. The trek also involves stopping at basic shelters where locals, sometimes former sandalwood smugglers, keep watch over the forest.
5. Wrapping Up the Trek:
The trek culminates back at the asphalt road, but not before a stop at a view point to soak in the tranquil atmosphere of the forest at night. The whole experience ends with a sense of excitement, serenity, and awe.
