Shivaji Park, Dadar

hiiii

You might think that this is just another park in Mumbai but here you are mistaken. Shivaji Park is a hub for the local community to thrive and you can always be a part of it. Not only does it have historical significance but it also has the  Parsi as well as the Marathi community living around the area, which makes it a place for cultural exchanges. The park also served as a spot for freedom fighters and political gatherings. At the same time, now it has also been a popular place for gatherings during the celebrations like Dussehra and Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti. So, in and around Dadar, make sure to visit this place and be part of the community culture here.

Being a collaboration of the Dutch studio MVRDV and local practice StudioPOD, this is a community space that gives you an escape from the infrastructural development of the city. A 200-metre-long linear park includes a play area, outdoor gym, seating, amphitheatre, and a vachanalaya (reading room) for the locals. But do you know the best part? These zones are also united by the graphics with blue furnishings, slides, climbing frames, chairs and tables all of which ensure a cohesive outlook to it!

The steps of St Stephen’s Church, Bandra

Can you think of several stairs that might be a community space for learning and having fun? Well, there is such in Bandra! After it was designed by Abraham John Architects, it now includes 880 sqm of public space where there is an open-air theatre along with a children’s play area. It also hosts various film screenings, photo exhibitions, live performances, and more, where various artists are also invited to showcase their work.

Sassoon Docks, Colaba

It might just be an old dock back in time now, but Sassoon Docks is a culture to experience. Located on the southern tip, it was built in the 19th century and was the first wet dock constructed in the city. Look at it now and you will find a hub for artists. Back in 2014, the initiative, St+Art India collaborated with the local community and a group of more than 40 artists together to transform the bland space into a vibrant art corner by capturing the lives of the different communities that reside around. It included canvases depicting the lives of Kolis, the Banjaras and the Hindu Marathas and all through various installations, photo stories, art exhibitions, and even graffiti.  So, whenever you are in the South, make sure you pay a visit to this vibrant spot and pay homage to the work of these artists.

NaMo Grand Central Park, Thane

Close to Mumbai, a newly-opened 25 acres of space is already garnering attention. On festivals like Gudi Padwa, the park hosts a lot of cultural fairs that one must not forget to be part of! The 20.5-acre  park has a jogging space, a three-acre lake with a landscaped promenade, a bridge where you can take selfies and various other facilities like an amphitheatre and an open gymnasium. On usual days, you can find groups chilling at the spot while on the days of holidays and festivities, it becomes a thriving place for art and culture.
