India has a history of many renowned Hindi poets and authors who have contributed significantly to Hindi literature through their poems, stories, plays, and much more! And, it is not very hard to assume that a lot of the references they use must come from the places where they lived. Today, on the occasion of Hindi Diwas, we are talking about the places where some of these popular authors and poets were born and spent their childhood.
Varanasi - Premchand
The 'city of ghats' or as it is also called, 'City of Lights', Varanasi is the birthplace of Munshi Premchand. Born in 1880 and brought up as 'Dhanpat Rai Shrivastava', Premchand spent his initial years here, which is considered to be one of the oldest cities in the world. While Varanasi is popular for its cultural significance, Premchand is also popular for showing the lives of people in North India mostly through his works like, 'Godan', 'Idgaah', 'Gaban', and more.
Jhansi - Maithili Sharan Gupt
Maithili Sharan Gupt, hailing from one of India's historically significant places, Jhansi, brought pride to his birthplace, Chirgaon, through his literary works. Born in 1886 to the Kankane clan of the Gahoi Baniya community, Gupt’s poetry often reflected themes of nationalism and love for the country, perhaps influenced by the legacy of Rani Laxmibai from his homeland. His poems on the Ramayana and Mahabharata also garnered significant attention.
Kausani - Sumitranandan Pant
In 1900, the great Hindi poet Sumitranandan Pant was born in Kausani, located in the Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand. Pant, considered the founder of the 'Chhayavaad' movement in Hindi poetry, lived amidst the scenic beauty and majestic charm of Kausani. His poems vividly capture the enchanting power of the place, with references to its rivers, hills, and atmosphere. Among his most famous works are 'Dharti Kitna Deti Hai' and 'Machhua Ka Geet.'
Bihar - Phanishwar Nath Renu
Born in 1921 in a village named Aurahi Hingna near the Simraha railway station in Bihar, Phanishwar Nath Renu belonged to the underprivileged 'Mandal' community. Renu is often remembered as the most popular writer after Premchand and his literature has always boasted the culture and traditions of Bihar, which also has diverse destinations for travellers. His works include 'Maila Aancha'l, 'Parati Parikatha', 'Dirghtapa', 'Juloos', and more.
Allahabad - Harivansh Rai Bachchan
The 'Agnipath' poet, Harivansh Rai Bachchan was born in 1907 in Allahabad, now Prayagraj. Bachchan is popular as the Hindi poet of 'Nayi Kavita Literary Movement' and his poems talk about the culture and people in the society. The city where he was from has also been popular for the confluence of India’s 3 most revered rivers. No doubt, how one could see in his poems, a vast dialogue about cultures. His popular works include 'Barsaat Ki Aati Hawa', 'Tera Haar', 'Madhushala', and more!
Midnapur - Suryakant Tripathi Nirala
One of the best authors of all times of Hindi Literature, Suryakant Tripathi Nirala was born in 1899 in Mahishadal in Midnapore that would be in the Bengal Presidency. He belonged to the Kanyakubja Brahm family here in Midnapur, which is known for its history. Situated on the banks of the Kangsabati River, this place has been a land for the freedom struggle movement and also continues to carry the legacy of folk music and dance. Coming from this place, Nirala is renowned for his 'Chayavaadi' poetry and some of his popular works include 'Alka', 'Nirupama', 'Apsara'.
