Indie Music of the Month

India’s indie music landscape continues to evolve in deeply expressive and genre-fluid ways. January’s releases reflect a return to emotion, poetry, and cultural memory — moving seamlessly between spiritual introspection, romantic nostalgia, experimental collaborations, and folk-driven energy. These artists are not chasing trends or algorithms; they are crafting music rooted in feeling, identity, and lived experience. As the year begins, India’s independent musicians set a thoughtful tone with work that invites listeners to slow down and listen more closely. Here’s a look at the indie releases that shaped the month.

Deveshi Sahgal – Woh Jagah (Album)

Tiger Baby Records introduces a compelling new voice in Indian indie music with Deveshi Sahgal’s debut Sufi album Woh Jagah. Founded by Ankur Tewari, Zoya Akhtar, and Reema Kagti, the label presents Deveshi as an artist whose music is anchored in emotional depth and spiritual inquiry. Woh Jagah unfolds as a meditative journey, exploring themes of self-discovery, divine love, and transcendence beyond ritual and identity. Songs such as Ae Re Sakhi, Asa Ishq Namaz, Uzr, and the title track reveal a quiet intensity that allows reflection to take precedence over spectacle.

A defining moment comes with Bulla Ki Jaana, Deveshi’s interpretation of the iconic Sufi poem, rendered with restraint and sincerity. While Woh Jagah was originally written and composed by Dadasaheb Phalke Award winner Mohammed Muneem Nazir, the album also features renditions of works by legendary poets, including Hazrat Amir Khusrau, Baba Bulleh Shah, and Dagh Dehlvi.

Mohit Chauhan & Kavita Seth – Heer

Heer brings together two of India’s most emotive singers — Mohit Chauhan and Kavita Seth — in a collaboration that celebrates melody and emotional subtlety. Released by Tips Music, the track is composed by Raaj Aashoo with lyrics by Seepi Jha, and leans into a timeless romantic sensibility. Rather than dramatic flourishes, Heer finds its strength in simplicity, allowing love, longing, and connection to unfold naturally.

Mohit Chauhan’s warm, conversational tone pairs beautifully with Kavita Seth’s soulful intensity, creating a vocal harmony that feels intimate and unforced. The composition leaves space for emotion to breathe, making Heer a song that lingers quietly rather than demanding attention. In a fast-paced musical landscape, it stands out for its sincerity and enduring melodic charm.

Pranay Dwivedi – Mai Mara Nahin

Pranay Dwivedi’s Mai Mara Nahin is a deeply introspective indie release that speaks to emotional endurance and quiet resilience. The song carries a confessional quality, driven by understated production and thoughtful lyricism. Rather than relying on dramatic crescendos, Pranay allows the emotion to build gradually, creating a sense of inner strength. There is vulnerability in both the writing and delivery, making the track feel personal yet universally relatable. Mai Mara Nahin resonates as a reminder that survival itself can be a form of defiance. Among January’s releases, it stands out for its honesty and emotional clarity.

Chaar Diwaari x Sanjith Hegde – Banda Kaam Ka

Banda Kaam Ka brings together Chaar Diwaari’s contemporary sonic edge and Sanjith Hegde’s expressive vocal presence in a collaboration that feels confident and current. The track plays with rhythm, attitude, and melody, offering a modern reflection on ambition, identity, and self-belief. The chemistry between the two artists is evident, with neither overpowering the other. Instead, the collaboration thrives on balance, highlighting the fluid nature of India’s indie music scene. Banda Kaam Ka is bold, catchy, and unapologetically modern — capturing the energy of today’s independent sound.

Boliyan Girls – Tringna (Badaa Karara Pudna)

Tringna by Boliyan Girls is a vibrant celebration of folk rhythm and regional identity. Rooted in traditional boliyan influences, the track delivers high energy while remaining grounded in cultural authenticity. Its infectious rhythm and spirited performance evoke the joy of collective celebration. What sets Tringna apart is its ability to feel both rooted and contemporary. It showcases how folk music can evolve without losing its essence, reclaiming space within modern indie storytelling. As January draws to a close, Tringna leaves listeners with movement, joy, and a renewed appreciation for regional sound.
