Born in 1959, Dr. Swaminathan comes from a family with a rich history in science and medicine. Her father, Prof. M. S. Swaminathan, a renowned agricultural scientist, played a significant role in India’s Green Revolution. Inspired by her family’s legacy, Dr. Soumya Swaminathan followed in their footsteps, obtaining her MBBS from the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune, India. She went on to earn her MD in Pediatrics and pursued a post-graduate fellowship in Neonatology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

She became the Director of the Department of Clinical Research at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), where she developed a strong focus on infectious diseases, particularly tuberculosis (TB).
