Coconut chutney, coconut water, coconut milk, we all come across all these food items every day in our lives but the use of coconut goes beyond just eating. A coconut tree is referred to kalpavruksh in Sanskrit which means every part of the tree is useful. Staying true to its name, baskets and bags are made from its fibre, and its trunks are used in making houses. Apart from these, the coconut shell is used to produce different sounds as well. The Handheld Coconut Shaker is a percussion instrument made from natural coconut shells. It is created by fusing together hollow coconut shells filled with dried beans that create the percussive shaking rattle sound as they collide with each other and the inside surface of the shaker.

Ravanahatha is an ancient bowed, stringed instrument, mostly associated with the violin family. The sound box of a Ravanahaththa is usually made with a gourd, coconut shell or a wooden block. It is believed that Ravan used the Ravanahatha to worship Lord Shiva.

Coconut Rattle is a handmade percussion instrument. This piece is made using a hard shell of coconut. Small conical pieces are tied together with a handle to hold them and produce a sound that is used in musical themes. This instrument is also believed to be used in sound healing.

Coconut Shell Maracas is another percussion instrument that is made from coconut shell. The maracas is a percussion usually played in pairs, one in each hand by holding it from the edges so as not to inhibit the vibration of the shell. Some maracas are studded with beads outside the shell to give them an extra-musical effect.

Kalimba is an African musical instrument with a wooden soundboard and metal keys. It's a type of thumb piano with 17 to 21 keys on a traditional wooden plank. It is also made on a coconut shell which usually has 7 to 8 keys but functions the same as a wooden plank kalinga.
