Met Gala 2025 is shining in New York and also on people's feeds on social media, where celebrities, including Indian celebrities and billionaires like  Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Kiara Advani, Diljit Dosanjh and Isha Ambani are acing the looks on the blue carpet. Far from the USA lies a silent, secluded, backwater of Kerala's Alleppey and the force behind the glazing blue carpet.

This unique 'Met Gala rug', which is adorned with floral patterns, has been woven by Neytt, an Alleppey-based brand, for the third time in a row. The carpet is a deep royal blue colour that offers a regal essence as a backdrop for the celebrities who have come here from across the world. The carpet also has golden daffodils to give it a touch of elegance.

As per the brand's declaration, the rug was a blank canvas (white rug) on which the floral design was hand-painted. The brand has even shared a video on their social media today with the caption, "No big deal — just our rug at The Met, again! We’re incredibly proud to have provided the Met Gala carpet for the THIRD time. A truly special moment for our country. Huge thanks to our phenomenal team—the real heroes behind the scenes—who brought it all to life.” But this is not it, as the video also carries the process and how it requires great skill, patience, and the detailing that has been done.

Neytt (Neytt by Extraweave), which is popular for weaving sustainable carpets and rugs, also made the carpet not just this year but in 2023 as well. It holds the legacy of 106 years of experience in the weaving field. However, the brand was started in 1917. As per the current co-founders, Neytt wants to create an exclusive sustainable space using exotic raw materials such as sisal, lyocell, and linen.

Reportedly, the brand made it to the Met Gala after having given the rugs to the White House for a special event during the visit of a head of state.

'Kerala weaving is getting popularity'

Seeing Kerala being represented at the international festival for its textiles, it is time for other fashion designers to be proud. "This is an iconic moment for Kerala as a small place like Alleppey has made it to international fame. As a designer and a Malayali, I feel very proud," says Alesha Nathaniya, a fashion designer from Kerala's Kannur.

Talking to Local Samosa, Nathaniya, who is also a model, says, "Kerala has a very rich culture in weaving, and it has been showcased for the second time through the Met Gala." However, she shows a sense of dismay while mentioning that the majority of the people in Kerala might not even be aware of such a heritage brand, Neyyt. "Even Malayalis are not aware of it, let alone the migrants here," she says.
