The fourteenth day of every lunar month, or the day before the new moon, is known as Shivratri. Among all the twelve Shivratris that occur in a calendar year, Mahashivratri - “the great night of Shiva”, the one that occurs in February-March, is of the most spiritual significance. On this night, the northern hemisphere of the planet is positioned in such a way that there is a natural upsurge of energy in a human being. It is believed that Maha Shivaratri commemorates the day that Lord Shiva executed the Tandava, the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction and also the night when Shiva and Parvati got married. Most importantly, it is celebrated to commemorate the triumph over ignorance and darkness.

To mark these events, people perform various rituals like bathing the Shiva Linga with milk, honey, yoghurt, ghee, and water, meditating, observing fast, chanting Shiva’s mantras, and consuming various delicacies. One of them which cannot be missed is thandai. Thandai is traditionally offered during Mahashivratri because it is considered a cooling and refreshing drink. Its ingredients, like almonds, cardamom, and rose water, are believed to soothe the body and are seen as a fitting offering to Lord Shiva, especially during the warmer months when the festival often falls. Essentially, it's a way to provide Lord Shiva with a drink that can help him combat the heat. It is also seen as a gesture to the Lord, symbolising the devotion and care of the devotees. So, if you are having thandi this Mahashivratri you know its significance now!
