With the Paralympics 2024 set to take place in Paris from 29th August, the spirits are high for Indians and if you are following the event this year, here's everything you need to know.
The 11-day event will be starting on 29th August and go up till 8th September. The 28th of August will be the opening ceremony with the commencement of the games on the 29th morning. 22 sports will feature at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, in 23 disciplines (with para-cycling including two disciplines - track and road) and a total of 549 events distributed across 269 sessions (morning, afternoon and evening).
India at Paralympic Games 2024
India will field their biggest-ever contingent for the Paris Paralympics 2024. With 84 athletes across 12 sports, including archery, athletics, badminton, canoeing, cycling, blind judo, powerlifting, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis and taekwondo, this session will see a sea of participants. With many disciplines already explored, India will compete in three new sports – para-cycling, para-rowing and blind judo in this Paralympics. Avani Lekhara wins historic double medals
On August 30, Indian shooter Avani Lekhara clinched a gold medal in the 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event. Her exceptional performance marked a significant achievement for India in the Paralympic Games as she became the first Indian woman to clinch two gold medals in the Paralympics. Additionally, Mona Agarwal won a bronze medal in the same category, contributing to India's impressive showing in shooting. This success highlights the growing prowess of Indian athletes in international Paralympic competitions.
Yogesh Kathuniya clinches silver in the discus throw
Yogesh Kathuniya won a silver medal in the Men's Discus Throw F56 event, showcasing his skill in the discus throw. He finished on the podium with his season-best throw of 42.22 meters on his first try.
Nishad Kumar's second podium in Men's High Jump
With a season-best jump of 2.04 meters, Indian para-athlete Nishad Kumar won a silver medal in the Men's High Jump. Nishad had also won a silver medal at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020.
Double bronze in athletics for Preethi Pal
Preethi Pal also inscribed her name in history as she became the first-ever Indian woman track and field athlete to win two medals at the Paralympics while clinching the bronze in the 100m and 200m T35 category with a personal best time of 30.01 seconds on Sunday.
Manish Narwal wins silver in shooting
Manish Narwal once again showcased his exceptional talent and determination by winning a silver medal in the P1 - Men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 event.
Rubina Francis bags bronze in Shooting
Rubina Francis secured a bronze medal in the women's 10m air pistol SH1 event, bringing India's tally to five on September 1. By doing so she became India's first female pistol shooter to land a medal in Paralympics.
Nitesh Kumar brings gold in Badminton
In the Men's Singles SL3 category badminton final, Nitesh Kumar defeated Daniel Bethell of Great Britain to earn the gold medal. Despite being down 21-20 in the final game, Nitesh won three successive points to clinch gold.
Manisha Ramadass gets bronze while Thulasimathi Murugesan wins silver in a single badminton event
In the third-place match in the Women's Singles SU5 category, Manisha Ramadass defeated Cathrine Rosengren of Denmark 2-0 (21-12, 21-8) to win her first-ever bronze medal at the Paralympic Games. With her triumph, India secured a double podium finish, while fellow countrywoman Thulasimathi Murugesan took home the silver medal.
Suhas Yathiraj brings home second Paralympics medal
IAS officer and shuttler Suhas Yathiraj clinched a silver medal in the men's singles SL4 badminton category. This is his second consecutive medal at the Paralympics.
Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Devi win bronze in archery
Para archers Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Devi won bronze in the archery mixed team compound open in a place match against Italy's Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonacina. This is India's second medal in para archery in the history of the Paralympics.
A gold for Sumit Antil in javelin
Para javelin thrower Sumit Antil became the first Indian to defend his title in the Paralympics. He won a gold medal with a best throw of 70.59 in his second attempt in the javelin throw.
Nithya Sre Sivan secures bronze in badminton
Indian Para-Shuttler Nithya Sre Sivan secured a bronze medal in the women’s singles SH6 category after beating Rina Marlina from Indonesia in straight sets
