Head to Dadar, and you are likely to be greeted by the very hustle and bustle that the city of dreams is famous for. While the infamous railway station connects the three lifelines of the city — the Western, Central, and Harbour lines — creating never-ending chaos, stepping outside reveals another layer of frenzy, with flower vendors, shops, and unrelenting traffic. Amidst all this, Dadar stands as a significant location, rich with historical accounts. One such notable site is Chaitya Bhoomi, which serves as a testament to this heritage.

Maharashtra celebrates Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar on multiple occasions, and Mumbai is no exception. Located in Dadar, Chaitya Bhoomi is one such place where Ambedkarites visit to pay homage to the creator of the Indian Constitution, both on his birth and death anniversary. Previously, this place was called Dadar Chowpatty, but it was only after the cremation of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar that it came to be known as 'Chaitya Bhoomi'. The day of his cremation has also been named 'Mahaparinirvan Din'.

Tranquility amidst traffic mayhem

As much as the bustling streets of Dadar, the western suburb of Mumbai, come to mind when one thinks of Dadar, Chaitya Bhoomi is surrounded by peace as one steps inside. The entrance has been designed to exemplify the Ashokan architectural style, with elements inspired by the Ashokan pillar and the Sanchi Gate. This architecture pays homage to the ancient Indian Emperor Ashoka, who contributed significantly to spreading Buddhism.

The gate is adorned with intricate carvings and symbolic motifs that stand tall and proud. The Ashokan architecture here is highlighted through the use of stone, detailed engravings, and symbolic elements such as the lotus and the dharma chakra. But beyond being an architectural design, it holds a profound meaning, representing the significance of why it stands here.

Ambedkar is said to have always drawn inspiration from the Ashokan legacy and how Ashoka upheld ethical governance and social justice, incorporating these principles into the Indian Constitution to ensure equality and human rights for all citizens. He also embraced the Buddhist tradition, advocating for its values of compassion, non-violence, and the rejection of caste discrimination. Some of these values can clearly be seen in the Constitution framed by him.

Along with Dr. Ambedkar, Chaitya Bhoomi also features a statue of Buddha. The aroma of flowers brought by the followers and admirers of Babasaheb Ambedkar fills the air. People chanting hymns can also be found here, remembering Babasaheb in their own way. Another attraction at Chaitya Bhoomi is the Dadar Chowpatty Garden, which includes a stupa-like structure where people often sit around. It is truly remarkable how this place maintains a sense of silence, even when people gather to offer prayers.

Although not very large, Chaitya Bhoomi remains a place that draws those seeking solace in an environment that honours the remarkable contributions of Babasaheb. It stands tall as a symbol of social justice for all, amidst the cosmopolitan population of Dadar, which encompasses all strata of society.
