The story of Saahas Zero Waste began over two decades ago with a simple yet powerful idea: waste isn’t waste until we waste it. Founded by Wilma Rodrigues in 2001 as an NGO, Saahas focused on raising awareness about sustainable waste practices. By 2013, it evolved into a private limited company, broadening its scope and impact. Their first big break came when the State Bank of India partnered with them for waste management, a collaboration that marked their entry into corporate partnerships. Fast forward to today, SZW operates in cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Goa, and Mumbai, with a robust infrastructure that includes multiple Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs). SZW’s services span waste management, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for plastic and e-waste, zero-waste events, consulting, and the production of recycled products. Their focus on integrating nature, people, and technology underpins every initiative, fostering a circular economy where waste is minimised and resources are maximised.

Impacting Society in the Saahas Way

Saahas Zero Waste isn’t just about managing waste—it’s about rewriting the story of sustainability. With over 42,122 metric tons of waste responsibly processed, they’ve turned landfill-bound trash into valuable resources. Their efforts have prevented a staggering 94,817 metric tons of CO2 emissions, a breath of fresh air for our planet. Along coastal areas, they’ve reclaimed 6,775 metric tons of plastic, transforming once-polluted shores into cleaner habitats. Saahas is proving that waste can be the foundation of a greener, brighter future. So, how do they do it? Let’s break it down.

Recycling Clothes and Fabrics

Step 1: Collection and Sorting
When you donate your clothes to Saahas, they’re first sorted based on quality. Good condition clothes are cleaned and prepared for reuse, and they’re either sent for resale through second-hand markets or swapped through organised clothes swap events.

Step 2: Upcycling
Clothes with minor stains or wear and tear are not discarded. Instead, they're creatively upcycled into new products like bags and home decor items. This is where the magic happens: turning what might be considered waste into functional and fashionable pieces.

Step 3: Recycling and Downcycling
For those clothes that are too worn out, they undergo a final step—recycling or downcycling. These clothes are processed to extract raw materials that can be used in the manufacturing of new products, ensuring they don’t end up in landfills. So, whether it's a gently used t-shirt or a torn curtain, your items will find a new purpose in a sustainable way. But all clothes must be washed, dried, and neatly folded before being sent.

Transforming Waste into Everyday Products

But wait, there’s more! Saahas Zero Waste doesn’t just focus on clothes – they are recycling all kinds of waste into everyday products that are practical, durable, and affordable. The list of products they create from recycled materials is impressive. They make eco board chairs, eco board park benches, recycled paper pencils and notebooks, upcycled photo frames, eco board sheet trays, planters, recycled toilet papers, and more. You can even buy affordable furniture starting at just Rs. 4000, or grab a pack of pencils for as little as Rs.200.

Zero-Waste Events

The company also offers comprehensive waste management services, ensuring that bulk waste from corporate parks, universities, and residential complexes is disposed of responsibly. Their waste management specialists handle events of all sizes, including weddings and large-scale exhibitions, even partnering with IPL games held in the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to reduce waste at major games. By helping organisations adopt zero-waste strategies, Saahas Zero Waste is reducing the environmental impact and ensuring that every event can be both successful and eco-friendly.

The Team Behind the Saahas Magic

At the core of Saahas Zero Waste (SZW) lies a dynamic team whose dedication and passion drive the mission of sustainable waste management. This team comprises visionary leaders, strategic thinkers, and the unsung heroes—often referred to as "recycling surgeons"—who meticulously sort and process waste, ensuring maximum recovery and minimal landfill. Wilma Rodrigues, the founder and Chief Transformation Officer, leverages her journalism background to fuel a passion for impactful storytelling and sustainability. As CEO, Shobha Raghavan drives SZW's operations with strategic leadership, focusing on scaling their impact across India. Many of these recycling surgeons are women from rural areas and underserved communities, empowered through employment opportunities that uplift their socio-economic status. For instance, partnerships with organizations like the Hosa Belaku Artisans Foundation have enabled over 120 livelihoods, with 90% being women, by upcycling textile waste into second-life products and masks. This holistic approach not only addresses waste management challenges but also fosters community development, making SZW's culture as inspiring as it is effective.
