Indian Luxury Fashion

India’s luxury fashion landscape has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past decade. Once heavily influenced by Western styles, it now embraces a distinctly Indian identity—deeply rooted in tradition, yet innovatively modern. As cultural pride converges with digital reach and sustainable values, Indian labels are asserting themselves as global contenders. Local Samosa talked to Simran Lalwani, Creative Director of Ostilos and Oorja Shah and Vatsala Kalani, Co-founders of Shop Mauve to understand the state of luxury fashion in India.

From Western Aspirations to Cultural Confidence

Ten years ago, Indian luxury was often defined by its imitation of Western haute couture. Today, it’s characterised by authenticity, storytelling, and craft.

“There’s a strong sense of individuality and pride in what we’re creating,” says Simran Lalwani. “Designers aren’t just selling garments—they’re building culture, stories, and identities.”

The evolution is driven by a growing community of informed, expressive designers who champion local narratives, and by consumers who now favour value-driven fashion over mere prestige.

Key Drivers of India’s Luxury Boom

Indian Luxury Market

India’s luxury market is growing at an unprecedented rate. According to recent reports, the country is expected to see a 50% growth in its ultra-high-net-worth individual (UHNWI) population by 2028, the fastest globally. Additionally, India’s luxury retail market is forecast to expand by 15–20% in 2025, outpacing mature markets like the US and Europe.

Several factors are driving this growth:

  • Rising disposable incomes in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities
  • Social media exposure and a globally connected, fashion-literate youth
  • Digital retail platforms, enabling niche and homegrown brands to reach wider audiences
  • A shift in values, with luxury now defined by meaning, sustainability, and craft

“It’s not just about owning luxury but about connecting with it,” says Lalwani. “People care about what a brand stands for.”

The Conscious Luxury Consumer

The modern Indian luxury buyer is thoughtful, values-driven, and expressive. Brands are no longer chosen solely for their logos but for their values—sustainability, craftsmanship, and cultural integrity are now front and centre.

“Today’s Indian consumer is more informed and discerning,” say Oorja Shah and Vatsala Kalani. “They’re choosing brands that align with their identity and beliefs.”

Luxury is increasingly viewed as personal—an investment in heritage, story, and intention.

The Revival of Indian Craftsmanship

India’s diverse heritage of textile, embroidery, and artisanal work is proving vital to the future of luxury fashion—both at home and abroad.

“The level of craftsmanship we have access to is unmatched,” Lalwani adds. “The future lies in blending traditional skill with modern design.”

Whether it’s the hand-stitched detailing on a jacket or the revival of the dupatta’s elegance as a luxury scarf, Indian craft traditions are being repurposed with relevance and flair.

“Artisanal skills are not just part of our past—they’re the foundation for globally resonant design,” say Shah and Kalani.

Labels Setting New Standards

A wave of Indian brands are challenging global norms and carving their own space in luxury. Some of the key players include:

  • Bodice – Celebrated for minimalism and award-winning sustainable design
  • Cord – Melding utility with Indian textiles
  • Pero – Known for intricate storytelling through handwork and fabric
  • Ostilos – A new-age brand blending bold silhouettes with refined Indian techniques
  • Shop Mauve – Creating elevated, versatile pieces with small-batch production to minimise waste

“We’re trying to build something that blends bold aesthetics with thoughtful craftsmanship,” says Lalwani. “It’s about telling a fresh Indian story through fashion.”

India on the Global Runway

The global fashion spotlight is turning towards India. Platforms like Lakmé Fashion Week now feature a spectrum of Indian luxury—from bridal couture to modern ready-to-wear. Meanwhile, Indian influencers such as Masoom Minawala are representing Indian design on global red carpets like Cannes, helping to elevate local brands internationally.

E-commerce giant Myntra’s expansion into Singapore is another sign of the global appetite for Indian design—especially among diaspora communities craving authentic, stylish, and ethical fashion.

As luxury evolves, India’s fashion industry stands at the intersection of heritage, innovation, and consciousness. What makes this rise truly significant is not just its economic value, but the cultural reclamation it represents.

Through small batches, artisanal detail, and sustainable values, Indian luxury brands are offering more than garments—they're offering meaning, identity, and legacy.
