New Update

The festive countdown has begun, but let's face it—Diwali gifting has become rather uninspired. Another box of sweets, a generic showpiece, the obligatory diya set—we've all been there, and frankly, it's time for a change. This year, consider something with genuine soul: textiles rooted in Rajasthan's age-old Barmeri craft. Picture wall hangings alive with colour, table runners that command attention, cushion covers telling centuries-old stories through needle and thread. These pieces work beautifully whether you're hosting festive gatherings or hunting for gifts that actually mean something.

#LocalWaliDiwali

Local Samosa’s #LocalWaliDiwali series puts a spotlight on India’s rich heritage of arts, crafts, and handicrafts, along with the local mom-and-pop stores that have been serving their communities for generations. This initiative celebrates the perfect blend of tradition and innovation, focusing on the most promising local stores that are at the heart of their cities, known for reviving traditional Indian crafts across various categories.

This Diwali, through this series, we are committed to showcasing the best local artists, craftsmen, and small businesses that preserve Indian heritage through their products. By putting these gems on the map, we aim to connect them with people beyond their city, giving these local businesses the visibility, boost, and clientele they deserve.

Historical Roots and Craftsmanship of Barmeri Work

sumaavi

Barmeri work, also known as Barmer appliqué, is a traditional textile art from the Barmer district of western Rajasthan. This distinctive craft is believed to have travelled from the West, gaining renewed prominence following Partition in 1947 when skilled artisans migrated to villages like Chohtan, bringing centuries-old techniques that became synonymous with the region's cultural identity.

Crafted primarily on cotton, Barmeri work employs the ancient appliqué technique—fabric patches in jewel-toned colours are artfully arranged and sewn to create intricate pictorial narratives and geometric compositions. Traditional stitches are embellished with mirrors (shisha work), beads, sequins, and metallic threads that bring designs to life. Drawing inspiration from Rajasthan's landscape, mythology, and folk tales, motifs range from elaborate florals and paisleys to bold geometric designs and rural life scenes. Each piece reflects generations of cultural storytelling passed down through families.

The Modern Revival: Barmeri Work Through Sumaavi's Vision

sumaavi

Barmeri work, despite its rich heritage and visual splendour, has remained relatively obscure in mainstream fashion conversations. Whilst other regional crafts occasionally grace fashion editorials and designer runways, this exquisite Rajasthani art form has not received the widespread recognition it truly deserves.

The modern revival of Barmeri work blends vibrant motifs and mirror embellishments with contemporary aesthetics. Sumaavi leads this movement, working directly with rural women artisans in Rajasthan who create these magnificent designs—many from repurposed fabric scraps. The brand bridges traditional craftsmanship with sustainable practices whilst empowering artisan communities.

Sumaavi's extensive Barmeri embroidery collection includes wall tapestries, table runners, cushion covers, carpets, round mats, and decorative pieces adorned with intricate beadwork and embroidery. From statement wall hangings to enchanting table runners, each handcrafted item brings Rajasthan's cultural legacy into contemporary living spaces. Every piece tells a unique story of artistry, transforming ordinary textiles into extraordinary works of heritage.
