It was named Chetak, after the loyal horse of Rajput warrior Maharana Pratap.

It offered an affordable and reliable mode of transport for a country hungry for mobility. From the late 1970s to the 1990s, Chetak ruled Indian roads. It was simple, dependable, and built to last. This was also the era when India’s middle class was beginning to grow, and owning a scooter was a big deal. The demand for Chetak was so high that waiting periods stretched for years. People booked it in advance, and in many households, receiving a Chetak was considered a proud moment, sometimes even a part of the wedding dowries.

The Fall: Changing Times, New Preferences

As the new millennium approached, the automobile market in India began to change. The entry of gearless scooters like the Honda Activa and more powerful, fuel-efficient motorcycles shifted consumer preferences. People now wanted convenience, speed, and sleeker designs. Chetak, with its manual gears and kick-start system, began to feel dated. Bajaj Auto, sensing the shift, decided to gradually phase out its scooter line and focus on motorcycles. In 2005, after more than three decades of service, the production of the classic Bajaj Chetak was officially discontinued. It was the end of an era, and for many. 

The Electric Comeback

But legends never really go away. The Chetak was the two-wheeler icon, just like the four-wheeler icon, the Ambassador. In 2020, Bajaj brought back the Chetak, this time as an electric scooter. Sleek, stylish, and sustainable, the new Chetak was designed for the future while honouring the past. Its retro-inspired design pays homage to the original model, while its electric heart makes it ready for the roads of tomorrow.
