There are an astounding 258 million blue-collar workers in India and a sizable fraction of them struggle with the effects of inflation and other financial obstacles.

The 21st-century dynamic landscape is significantly altering the position of blue-collar labour. Technology and AI integration, upskilling blue-collar workers, gig economy growth, and legislative initiatives are pivotal factors shaping the future of blue-collar workers. We are witnessing the emergence of the workplace and workforce of the future, with its evolving expectations, relationships, and functions. Thanks to the growth of the digital economy and widespread use of technology there has been a swift transition towards remote labor, automation, and creativity.

Nilesh Dungarwal, Co-founder, and CEO at WorkIndia pens down the Trends and Predictions of The Future of Blue-Collar Employment.

The future blue-collar workforce is integrating technology in a harmonious way as digitization picks up speed. This is not just a reorganization of job roles; it is also a fundamental change in the way that the large and historically unorganized blue-collar workforce is managed. Throughout the whole blue-collar value chain, full-service recruiting agencies are actively digitizing records and databases to improve efficiency and streamline workflows. It has undergone unprecedented changes as a result of the rise of digital hiring platforms, paperless onboarding, automated payroll, automated compliance systems, geofenced attendance systems, automated payroll, and digital upskilling, loan, and career advancement opportunities available on a single platform for blue-collar workers.

Similarly, the integration of automation and artificial intelligence (AI) across numerous industries is one of the major themes that will shape blue-collar jobs in the future. Even though these technologies are frequently linked to job losses, they also give blue-collar workers' novel possibilities. Technology has a big impact on managing the workforce in blue-collar jobs. The convergence of several technologies and the blurring of borders between the physical and digital worlds will characterize the upcoming Fourth Industrial Revolution, which we are rapidly approaching. Technology has caused many things to alter and many jobs to become obsolete, but the human element has not disappeared. Robotics and AI-driven technology can be used to increase efficiency, decrease risks at work, and generate a need for qualified professionals to operate.

Future Workforce has opportunities because of the transitioning landscape. However, it must be ensured that nobody is left behind. For blue-collar jobs, upskilling and reskilling are becoming essential as technology develops. As per the 2022 Future of Jobs Report by the World Economic Forum, automation is expected to displace 85 million jobs by 2025, while simultaneously creating 97 million new jobs. Thus, in order to adjust to the evolving nature of the labour market, employees across all industries—including blue- collar workers—will need to upgrade their skills. They must adjust to new technology as automated processes progressively replace traditional manual labour. In order to provide

blue-collar workers the skills they need to succeed in a technologically driven workplace, industry-specific training programs and educational efforts are crucial. Governments, businesses, and educational institutions must collaborate to provide accessible and affordable training opportunities for the workforce.

Additionally, the Emergence of the Gig economy will act as a catalyst in influencing the future of blue-collar employment. Workers are opting for more flexible work schedules, and companies are utilizing platforms to find qualified workers on a project-by-project basis. Based on research conducted by the WorkIndia team, we discovered that 39% of blue-collar workers are in favour of flexible work schedules. Blue-collar workers now have more autonomy and the chance to broaden their skill sets by taking on projects in a variety of industries thanks to the trend towards gig labour. The blue-collar gig economy in the nation will soon make a significant contribution to India's labour market, according to a study by the Boston Consulting Group and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, which projects that within 8 to 10 years, the total gig job could reach 90 million and will contribute 1.25% to India's GDP.

The three industry-defining blue-collar trends—technology advancements throughout the blue-collar value chain, the expanding gig economy, and the simplification of labour laws that are about to take effect are propelling the sector forward to unprecedented heights. We can negotiate the future of blue-collar employment with resilience and optimism if we embrace change, invest in education and training, and create inclusive workplaces. We are at the beginning of a new era, and governments, corporations, and labour unions must work together to create a future that not only supports but also empowers blue-collar workers providing meaningful livelihoods for them.
