When one person donates a unit of blood, it can be separated into individual components to save multiple lives. Blood donors can help meet the daily transfusion needs of cancer and surgery patients, accident and burn victims, newborns and mothers delivering babies, AIDS and sickle cell anaemia patients, and many more. Here are a few blood donation centres in Mumbai that offer various products such as Whole Blood, Red Blood Cell Concentrate, Random Donor Platelets ( RDP), Single Donor Platelets (SDP),  Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP), Cryoprecipitate, Cryo deficient plasma (CDP).

General Criteria for Blood Donors:

• The person should be fit and in a healthy condition.
• Should be between the ages of 18 to 65 years.
• Weight should be more than 45 kgs (in most cases).
• Should have Hameoglobin more than 12.5 gm/dl.
• The donation interval for whole blood donation should be once in three months for males and four months for females.
• The donor should not have had malaria in the last three months.
• The donor should not have had jaundice or typhoid in the last year.
• The donor should not have Uncontrolled Thyroid disorders, Diabetes, Heart disease, cardiovascular diseases or infectious diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B or C or Cancer (other diseases may vary as per the donation centre).
• Should not have had a blood transfusion in the last 12 months.
• Other requirements as per the donation centre or doctor's guidelines.

• Tata Memorial Centre 

Tata Memorial Centre by Tata Memorial Hospital is located in Lower Parel, Mumbai. The donation process is simple. Their website mentions you may be eligible to donate blood if you are 18 - 60 years old, weigh at least 45 kgs and are in good health. One needs to book an appointment prior to donation.

• Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre 

Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre actively carries out indoor and outdoor blood donation camps and adheres to a 100% component policy as mentioned on their website. The donation timing is 9 am to 5 pm on all working days.

• Kokilaben Dhirubai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute

Kokilaben Hospital also regularly conducts blood donation drives and one can donate blood at their centre in Andheri, Mumbai. The blood donated is used to replace blood lost during injury (accidents), replace blood lost during surgeries, help patients with bleeding disorders (like Hemophilia) survive, help burnt patients receive plasma that may be critical for their survival and raise Haemoglobin levels in patients with chronic ailments like Kidney diseases, Cancer and Anemia as mentioned on their website. • Lokmanya Tilak Muncipal General Hospital Blood Bank

LTMG hospital is one of the major Municipal Corporation Greater Mumbai (MCGM-run) hospitals which is centrally located. They even help people organize blood donation camps in their areas. The donation hours are from 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays and 9 AM to 1 PM on Saturdays.

• BARC Blood Bank 

BARC Blood Bank is a well-equipped licensed blood bank with facilities for bleeding of healthy donors, storage and issuing of whole blood and blood components including packed red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma, random donor platelet concentrate and cryoprecipitate anti-hemophilic factor to patients. The donation timings are 9 am to 4:30 pm.

• Holy Family Hospital

Holy Family Hospital encourages blood donation for voluntary or replacement from healthy donors. They are open 24/7 for blood needs but donations are accepted from 9 am to 5 pm from Monday to Saturday.

K J Somaiya Blood Centre is a 24/7 centre for blood requirements, a 12-hour-a-day donation centre and also organizes regular blood donation drives in Mumbai. The donation timing is 9 am to 9 pm from Monday to Saturday.

The department of Hiranandani Hospital has a blood and blood component (Apheresis) donation centre which collects blood from 100% voluntary non-remunerated donors. The centre also provides pre and post-donation counselling services with the help of trained counsellors. The blood donation service is available from 9 am to 6 pm on all weekdays.
