When one person donates a unit of blood, it can be separated into individual components to save multiple lives. Blood donors can help meet the daily transfusion needs of cancer and surgery patients, accident and burn victims, newborns and mothers delivering babies, AIDS and sickle cell anaemia patients, and many more. General Criteria for Blood Donors:
- The person should be fit and in a healthy condition.
- Should be between the ages of 18 to 65 years.
- Weight should be more than 45 kgs (in most cases).
- Should have Haemoglobin more than 12.5 gm/dl.
- The donation interval for whole blood donation should be once in three months for males and four months for females.
- The donor should not have had malaria in the last three months.
- The donor should not have had jaundice or typhoid in the last year.
- The donor should not have Uncontrolled Thyroid disorders, Diabetes, Heart disease, cardiovascular diseases or infectious diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B or C or Cancer (other diseases may vary as per the donation centre).
- Should not have had a blood transfusion in the last 12 months.
- Other requirements as per the donation centre or doctor's guidelines.
