Arthat Studio

If you have recently travelled from Mumbai airport, you might have seen the player installations of the famous IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians. The gigantic structures are a work of art, but you might not know the team that made it happen. The 12-foot sculptures bringing the IPL team's animated "Mighty Indians" characters to life have been conceptualised and created by a collective team of artists at the Arthat Studio. "Mumbai Indians' marketing team approached us to create something unique for the IPL," explains Jitendra Patel, co-founder of Arthat Studio. "We suggested larger-than-life sculptures of these characters so kids and fans of all ages could connect with them."

But it’s not as merry as it seems. The process was meticulous—transforming 2D animations into realistic 3D sculptures required face scanning of players to capture their likeness, followed by modelling, fibre casting, and realistic painting. The result? Striking 450kg installations that have become a photo attraction for cricket enthusiasts. And, that’s not all, Arthat Studio has worked on several other projects of even greater magnitude for reputed organisations and parties across India.

What makes them unique is their refusal to be confined by medium or technique. Founded by four friends—co-founders being Ashok Namdev, Deval Vala, Jitendra Patel and COO, Hiren Masharu, from Gujarat in 2017 (though the team collaborated unofficially for years before), the studio has pioneered anamorphic art installations in India— a technique where distorted images appear coherent from specific viewing angles. "For us, the medium is not a barrier," Patel notes. "It should justify the concept. We explore different idioms and experiment with ideas."

This experimentation has led to remarkable projects like their Samudra Manthan-themed installation for ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation), incorporating the company's services within traditional mythology through sculptures made from waste materials from ONGC operations. Environmental consciousness runs through much of Arthat's work. Their portfolio includes murals created from electronic waste for WPP Group, Edward Munch's "The Scream" reproduced using waste plastic and polythene for TED Talks, and installations made from discarded plastic bottles for UNDP India.

"We've worked extensively with sustainability aspects—from electronic waste to scrap metal to waste plastics and polythene bags," says the co-founder. “In this journey of over 8 years, we have experimented with a lot of art forms.” Whether it is shadow art or light programming, interactive museum experiences, projection mapping or using the hologram technology to make art, Arthat has done it all. This comes from a bond and experience working with all the founders from different backgrounds. The founders—all classmates from college—came to Mumbai for learning and experience, working in advertising, film production, and animation before joining forces. "We all had different expertise," Jitendra reflects. "From idea to final exhibition, we can handle it in-house, unlike big agencies that often outsource implementation."

This holistic approach has earned them accolades, including a Cannes Lion Award for their project “The Everything Book” for Vedantu in collaboration with Dentsu, and recognition for their work with brands like Godrej, Hyundai, and Star India, as well as major events like NH7 Weekender and music festivals in Goa and Kutch.

ARTHAT sTUDIO WORK

While this may just be the tip of the iceberg, Arthat Studio continues to blend technology with tradition, sustainability with spectacle, creating memorable installations that transform spaces and tell stories. From museum experiences to projection mapping to shadow art, they're redefining what's possible in Indian art installations.
