winter hair care routine

For all the curly heads out there, here's a simple winter hair care routine that will make your hair look and feel great.

The direct relation between winter and dry, frizzy hair is a horror story no one ever wants to witness. So after an endless number of hits and trials, Fuzzy Curls have now figured out ways to maintain hair health even in this cold and dry weather with this winter hair care routine. Here are a few hair care tips by Vibha and Megha, the dynamic duo from Bangalore who shares hair care solutions for frizziness, dryness, and all the hassle that curly hair brings. Find out some tips to follow during winter to keep your hair healthy and prevent breakage.

Step 1

Every single time you wash your hair, make sure to oil it for at least 1 hour and a maximum of three. Especially if you have an oily scalp, don't overdo it. Massage your scalp well with the oil and apply the oil to the lengths and ends as well. While washing it off, make sure that you don't use hot water because it's winter. It’s a well-known fact that hot water damages your hair. Doing it in the long term may make your hair feel dry and rough. It will take the shine away. Switch to warm water, you can use it throughout the year. It’s important to not skip conditioning/deep conditioning whenever hair feels dry. Detangling hair with a conditioner is always a better idea to prevent hair loss.

Step 2

The next step is to apply the serum after a hair wash to lock in the moisture. Apply one to two drops of serum to the lengths and ends of your hair every single night before sleeping. Use a satin pillowcase. as this will avoid moisture from getting sucked. Don't oil your hair in such a way that it drips. This will clog your pores and make them dandruff-prone.

What else?

After two to three days of hair wash, style your hair in a way that protects moisture, most people usually go with braids. This avoids the hair from drying. Working out is another useful way to keep the hair and face away from dryness.

A common issue that people usually face in winter is an itchy scalp. To prevent this, make sure to co-wash instead of shampooing more often. Co-washing once a week instead of using a moisturizing shampoo goes a long way. Apply nourishing oils like rosemary or peppermint oil on your scalp mixed with carrier oil. It also helps slight dandruff go away. Use a clarifying shampoo when your scalp and hair need it. For any build-up, rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar at least twice a month. This helps in getting rid of all the build-up that is on the scalp and any itchiness and dirt. It makes the hair shiny as well.

Use a white tooth comb or a detangling brush to get rid of all the tangles completely. Don't leave any conditioner on your hair. Instead of curl cream, use a stronghold gel or a finger or brush coil or wonky curls and let it dry followed by a lightweight serum. Why do I skip the curl cream? Because it takes a really long time to dry completely and a deep conditioner or a conditioner provides enough moisture. Hence skip curl cream sometimes and just use a strong hold gel.

One should avoid styling their hair when it's soaking wet because it takes a really long time to completely dry and also it reduces volume. Style your hair only when it's damp. It also dries your hair very quickly. Try to wash your hair only once a week. So on non-wash days,  I just detangle my hair with the oil and braid it.
