Aatmanirbharta named as Hindi Word of the year 2020 by Oxford Languages

Aatmanirbharta was chosen as the Hindi Word of the Year by Oxford Languages with the help of an advisory panel of language experts.

PM Narendra Modi's emphasis on Aatmanirbharta in the wake of the pandemic made Oxford Languages name it the Hindi Word of the Year 2020. It's so because it "validated the day-to-day achievements of the countless Indians.”

Aatmanirbharta stands for self-reliance and was chosen by an advisory panel of language experts. It included Kritika Agrawal, Poonam Nigam Sahay, and Imogen Foxell.

Hindi word of the year reflects mood of 2020

The Oxford Hindi word of the year is chosen to reflect the ethos, mood, or preoccupations of the passing year. And also that has lasting potential as a term of cultural significance.

Aatmanirbharta was certainly one of those words and references that India and especially the netizens used a lot in 2020.

From starting a new business on your own to making lifestyle changes to even the most viral memes, Aatmannirbharta definitely made our timelines a lot more interesting.

According to an official statement, there was a massive increase in the usage of, Aatmanirbharta, following the PM's address.

Previous Hindi words that landed in this category by Oxford are Aadhar (2017), Nari Shakti (2018), and Samvidhaan (2019).
