To promote menstrual hygiene among girls, the Punjab government has decided to provide sanitary vending machines in schools.
It is an unfortunate fact that we still consider menstruation to be a "hush episode". But here comes positive news from Punjab. Taking an important step towards ensuring menstrual hygiene, the Punjab Government is all set to provide sanitary vending machines in schools.

The Punjab School Education Department has released a grant of Rs. 8.6 crore after the approval from the Education Minister. Almost 2521 high and senior secondary government schools in Punjab will be the beneficiary of this grant.
Rs 32,000 to each school for the installation of sanitary vending machines in schools
Under this scheme, each school will get a grant of Rs. 32,000 for the healthcare of the girls. After this, schools will install Sanitary pad vending and incinerator machines.
The Education department of Punjab is also taking special measures for the proper implementation of this plan. The move is a significant work towards promoting hygiene among girls.
On January 7, the Chief Minister of Punjab Captain Amarinder Singh had announced free sanitary pads for girls studying in schools and colleges. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also highlighted the importance of menstrual hygiene. He had got much appreciation from people over social media for breaking the taboos about "menstruation".
Before Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Odhisha and Gujarat have already taken this novel step.
According to National Family Health Survey 2015-16, only 36% of women use sanitary napkins, However, the rest of them go for other unhygienic substitutes of it.
