New Update

After realizing that people walk away freely after paying the fine, BMC will now distribute free masks to Mumbaikars.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation(BMC) will now distribute free masks to the people who move out without one at public places, along with imposing fine on them.

Why BMC will distribute free masks?

The move has come after realizing that people walk away freely after paying the fine. As per rules, BMC teams charge ₹200 from the offenders for not wearing a mask in public places. According to BMC officials, the main motive of imposing a fine had always been to spread awareness and the importance of wearing a mask in public to protect from the COVID virus. On the contrary, citizens were always found to be neglecting the cause after they paid the fine. The officials also stated that the receipt of the fine will include that the concerned offender has been provided with the mask.

Total collection from fine is worth ₹10,07,81,600

After the directions given by BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal on October 14, the officials have collected ₹10,07,81,600 from across 24 wards of Mumbai.
