From food to art and rich history and heritage, Kolkata is the cultural hub of the country. And it’s charm has attracted a lot of Bollywood directors and producers who decided to embrace the Bengali culture and shoot some beautiful movies in the city. Here are some of our all-time favourite movies shot in Kolkata.

1. Kahaani

One of the most epic thrillers in the history of Indian cinema, the plot of Kahaani, revolved around an attack in Kolkata Metro. The film not only takes you through the narrow bylanes of the city but also gives a feel of what it’s like to be a local.

2. Barfi

Who can forget the cute characters played by Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra in this theatrical masterpiece. Although only a few scenes depict the vibe of the city, the backdrops of Kolkata give the movie the necessary charm.

3. Piku

If you want to know what life is like in a middle-class Bengali family, then this is the film to watch. From the typical busy roads of the city with honking buses to the narrow lanes of North Kolkata, director Shoojit Sircar manages to capture it all. This is one of the entertaining movies shot in Kolkata.

4. Love Aaj Kal

We are talking about the one with Saif and Deepika, of course. Can you believe it’s been more than 10 years since it’s release already? Despite that, the film still manages to take us through some of the beautiful parts of the city. Be ready to see the Howrah Bridge and some parts of South Kolkata when you watch the film again.

5. Gunday

The 2014 release starring Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra is set in the 70s-80s in Calcutta. The film not only gives you a peek of the iconic Howrah Bridge but also gives a feel of Durga Puja.

6. Lootera

A film that introduced us to a new side of both Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha, Lootera was set in Bengal in the 50s. The film lets you see some parts of the city along with the rural landscape of the areas nearby.

7. Parineeta (2005)

One of the most iconic movies shot in Kolkata, Parineeta stars Vidya Balan, Saif Ali Khan, and Sanjay Dutt. Primarily set in Kolkata showcasing the 60s, this film will give you an authentic feel of old Kolkata. One of its songs was shot at James Prinsep Memorial, which is located in the heart of the city.

8. Yuva

This Mani Ratnam directorial is not only based in Kolkata, but a massive part of the film revolves around an iconic location in the city. Yes, we are talking about the Howrah Bridge. The bridge plays such an important part in the film that the move was supposed to be named after the landmark. The political thriller that was released in 2004 came with a heavy-hitting cast including Ajay Devgn, Vivek Oberoi, Abhishek Bachchan, Esha Deol, Kareena Kapoor, and Rani Mukerji.
